Get this: China's pissed. They don't want the FDA to put warning labels on their toothpaste just because of some silly antifreeze!
The toothpaste in question is less than 15.6% diethylene glycol, so it probably won't give us cancer. It probably won't cause hideous deformities. It probably won't even kill us. Sure, other products exported from China containing DEG have resulted in fatalities. But how dare we disallow toxic toothpaste across our borders? Isn't it insult enough that we're not buying any more deadly melamine to feed to our pets?
And these items aren't the only - oops - toxic accidents to show up on our doorstep. We've turned away seafood products tainted with poisons, drugs, and 'unauthorized' antibiotics. (Let's not forget that *their* FDA head has been sentenced to death for accepting bribes in exchange for food and drug approvals, including an antibiotic that killed ten people before it was pulled!) We've rejected juice with dangerous color additives.
Given that in 2006, the FDA only inspected 1.3% of food brought into the U.S., what other Trojan horses may be sitting on grocery store shelves?
